2. Site Preparation

  • Clearing: Remove vegetation, debris, old structures and organic material from slab area.

  • Excavation: Excavate to required depth according to design and soil conditions.

  • Compaction: Compact subgrade using plate compactor or roller to achieve uniform density.

  • Moisture Check: Ensure no standing water; regrade and install drainage if necessary.

  • Soil Proof-Rolling: Test compaction with proof-rolling for uniform firmness.

3. Formwork Installation

  • Layout: Mark slab boundaries, corners and elevations using string lines and stakes.

  • Form Setup: Install wooden or metal forms to correct dimensions and alignments.

  • Form Bracing: Secure forms with stakes and braces to resist concrete pressure.

  • Elevation Check: Use a laser level to confirm slab height and slopes for drainage.

  • Apply Form Release Agent: Prevent concrete from sticking to forms for easy removal.

4. Sub-Base & Vapor Barrier Installation

  • Base Layer Placement: Spread crushed stone and gravel (typically 4–6 inches).

  • Level & Compact: Compact base material to create a stable, even surface.

  • Install Vapor Barrier (if required): Place polyethylene sheeting to prevent moisture migration.

  • Tape Seams & Penetrations: Overlap and seal all joints and penetrations.

5. Reinforcement Installation

  • Rebar or Mesh Placement: Position reinforcement per design (grid pattern or rebar layout).

  • Chairs & Spacers: Support reinforcement to maintain proper height within slab thickness.

  • Overlap & Tie Bars: Secure rebar overlaps with wire ties for structural integrity.

  • Inspection: Conduct pre-pour inspection to verify placement, spacing and clearances.

6. Concrete Pouring

  • Concrete Delivery: Order proper mix (e.g., 3,000–4,000 PSI) and confirm slump consistency.

  • Moistening Base: Lightly dampen base to prevent water absorption from concrete.

  • Placement: Pour concrete continuously to avoid cold joints.

  • Vibration & Consolidation: Use vibrators to remove air pockets and ensure full contact with reinforcement.

  • Screeding: Level the surface with a straightedge to proper elevation.

  • Bull Floating: Smooth the surface to embed aggregates just below the top layer.

  7. Finishing Operations

  • Initial Set Check: Wait until surface moisture sheen disappears (bleed water evaporates).

  • Edging & Jointing: Round slab edges and cut control joints to prevent random cracking.

  • Troweling: Finish surface to desired texture—steel trowel for smooth, broom finish for traction.

  • Surface Protection: Cover slab if wind, heat, or rain conditions threaten curing process.

 8. Curing Process

  • Curing Method: Use curing compound, plastic sheeting, or wet burlap.

  • Maintain Moisture: Keep slab surface damp for at least 7 days for strength development.

  • Temperature Monitoring: Protect from rapid drying during curing.

 9. Form Removal & Final Work

  • Form Removal: Carefully strip forms after initial curing (usually 24–48 hours).

  • Edge Repair: Patch any honeycombs or chipped edges.

  • Expansion Joints: Install joint filler material between slab sections or adjacent structures.

  • Site Cleanup: Remove debris, excess material and clean jobsite.

 10. Inspection & Quality Control

  • Surface Flatness: Check with straightedge or laser for tolerance compliance.

  • Compressive Strength Testing: Use cylinder or core samples as required.

  • Crack Inspection: Verify control joints and ensure no excessive cracking.

  • Final Approval: Confirm alignment, finish quality and curing results before load application.
